Greensburg – Aquinas Academy has always focused on service to the community, but this year students have taken service projects a step further.

Each grade selected and researched a nonprofit organization and was given a month to execute a plan to provide assistance. They then coordinate school donation drives.

Students gain an understanding of the importance of the organizations and what they need.
First-graders chose The Kentucky Project, a mission of St. Barbara Parish, Harrison City.

“My mom and dad donated to this project for years. I wanted to honor them and thought this would be the perfect place,” said teacher Annette Ustazewski.

Parishioners have been taking monthly truckloads of donations to the most distressed regions of Kentucky for 16 years. Donations provide for basic needs of more than 300 families. Aquinas Academy students gathered personal care products for Christmas hygiene bags. The students are proud of how much was collected and it made them happy that they could help others
