St. Sebastian school students bring love, joy to care home residents

Belle Vernon – Nothing can bring joy into one’s heart quite like helping to place joy in the hearts of others.

Students in third through eighth grade are finding that out at St. Sebastian Regional Catholic School.

The upper-grade religion classes are reaching out with love to residents of the Country Care Manor Assisted Living facility in Fayette City during the school year.

Religion teacher Maureen Ruschak said the students are taking turns creating festive gifts for the residents.

More than 32 residents have received Halloween goodie bags or autumn-themed wall hangings, all accompanied by handmade cards.

Taking time from regular class work to complete these projects reinforces the lessons of selfless love that the students learn at the school. During the
Christmas season, students sang carols at Country Care Manor and gave the residents handmade crafts.

The goal is to foster an outreach of love, Ruschak said.

Fourth-graders Emilia Fouch and Evan Wolfgang said the experience made them smile and feel happy, and said they are looking forward to more visits.
“We made crafts with them and I think it made them feel good,” Emilia said.

“We handed out blankets and some of the people cried,” Evan said. “Some of them smiled.”

Ruschak said she and students talked beforehand about the importance of the visits for both the residents and the students. More visits are planned.

“Some of them had visited there before so they had an idea,” she said. “The kids really did so well.”

Primo James Altomari_, Grade 6

The Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, Monessen
Parents: Patsy and Liza Altomari

Primo shines as a role model student. He was awarded the school’s Student of the Month for December. He is kind, smart and helpful with others, and demonstrates patience and perseverance when faced with a challenge. He is willing to go the extra mile for anything that is asked of him. When there is a school function on the calendar, Primo can be counted on to be in attendance. He wears his religion on his sleeve and is always happy to show you the cross he always has on him. Primo is highly competitive, determined to be successful and has a great sense of humor.

Primo is a leader in School Buddy Day activities, sings in the choir, plays recreational and travel baseball, plays basketball for the school, and volunteers for school and church functions. His favorite events to help with are the parish festival and the school’s Breakfast with Santa. He does community service at the Hallsworth House.

The Altomari family lives by the following quote” “Unity is our strength, where we go one, we go all.”
